“Begin more projects than you can possibly finish.” –Sark
This is pretty much me lately. I have not felt disciplined enough to write anything of substance (including this blog–yes, you need not read anymore–hey, I just saved you a bunch of time!). And I’m letting that be OK. Have been flitting around with other creative pursuits. […]

Remember the trips down the stairs in the sleeping bag? Remember crumpling at the bottom in a little heap?
C likes to do it, sans sleeping bag. She situates herself with her tummy against the stairs, and then just bumpity-bumps all the way down. She uses her arms and legs to steady herself and keep herself […]

i noticed something the other
day driving in the car–
looking through the rear-view mirror–
superimposed on the traffic
(trailing, passing, flashing)
was my little girl,
but she wasn’t all there, she was
see-through like a ghost.
and the light had to be just right
otherwise she vanished,
or i just saw an arm,
or the dark outline of her carseat buckle,
or the glint of blond […]

This is life as a pastor in the Presbyterian Church (USA):
1:44 p.m. today:
An e-mail from a parishioner, upset with the latest shenanigans perpetrated by our General Assembly, with a warning: “I don’t know how much longer I can support this denomination…” She is especially grieved by the GA’s condemnation of the unilateral and preemptive nature […]

Vacation Bible School has begun at our church. This place goes nuts for VBS. You know the trend to have ever-more-elaborate children’s birthday parties? Same idea here, I think. It’s crazy busy, but it does make for an incredible experience even for the adults.
I think people here really do decorate the place out of […]

A Parable of the Working Mother
Just finished reconciling my bank statements, which I had not done since December. And yet, miraculously, my husband still wants to be married to me.
Even with the help of Quicken and online banking which downloads transactions automatically, it was tedious. How did people even balance their checkbooks before Quicken? I […]

Isn’t it luminous, and humbling, when people say what you feel, and say it better than you could?
I’ve been thinking lately about the various platitudes that take up residence in our heads.
A big one for me is the statement,
“She’s a pretty good [X], considering [Y].”
Usage: She’s a pretty good minister, considering she’s got […]

Took C to Music Time at the local Borders today. Didn’t libraries used to do this kind of thing? Maybe they still do. The libraries I’ve been in lately are depressing, poorly-lit government buildings. Perhaps I should look into this more.
The place was packed with moms (and a few dads) and their kids. C […]

I forgot
“ah-choo”
(when anyone sneezes–I think she thinks she’s saying “bless you”)
and
“bibi” and “ehmo” (Big Bird and Elmo)
—–

“boo?” (balloon)
“bubba” (bubbles)
“ba” (ball–anything round, including grapes)
“chica” (herself)
“ou” (outside)
“kaka” (cracker–anything crunchy that comes in a box)
new body parts: hands, fingers, feet, teeth
she also counts to ten while climbing the stairs:
1. [skips over]
2. two
3. eh
4. [indistinguishable]
5. fa
6. see
7 and 8. [indistinguishable]
9. no
10. two!
I write this mainly just to roll this blog over to July… but I […]
