What a cool story - your dad must have been a fun person to know.

My nephew agitated for a pocketknife for several years and was promised he could have it at 10. When his younger sister turned 10 three years later, she said to her dad, "I guess I'll be getting my pocketknife!" My Little Princess wants one for her tenth birthday next month, too.

Your "random reminiscence" sparked wonderful memories of my own dad. He lobbied on my behalf when I was 10 years old and asked for a football uniform for Christmas. My mom was horrified when he went out on his own, bought it, and wrapped it for me. She had decided it would be the first Christmas I wouldn't get what I asked for, because it just "wasn't appropriate for a girl to play football." My dad's face lit up when I modeled it for him Christmas morning. He wasn't perfect [as his gay son can testify], but he did more to encourage me to pursue my dreams than anyone else I know.
