1. Number of books I own.

Oh, I don’t know. I would say in the neighborhood of 800 or so? Might break 1,000.

2. The last book(s) I bought.

Leaves from the Notebook of a Tamed Cynic, Reinhold Niebuhr (been on my list for a long time) Thoughts on the first few years of ministry. Written 80+ years ago but still current.

The Circle of Life: The Heart’s Journey through the Seasons, Macrina Wiederkehr and Joyce Rupp (a book of poems and meditations, organized by the four seasons of the year (natural seasons, not liturgical ones) Just flipping through the book makes me glad.

This is the Day: Readings and Meditations from the Iona Community – bought this to give to my head of staff for her 25th ordination anniversary, and had to buy one for myself!

3. The last book that I read.

I’m re-reading the Chronicles of Narnia, and just finished The Horse and His Boy. Y’know? Not the best. But some lovely moments that’ll preach.

Currently reading Prince Caspian, and will start Gilead soon. Which seems to be a revpals requirement.

4. Books that mean a lot to me.

The Bible.
A Wrinkle in Time. Love conquers all.
A Prayer for Owen Meany. Helped me discern my call to ministry.
Charlotte’s Web. The first chapter book I read.
Before You Were Born. A lovely picture book based on Psalm 139.
The Runaway Bunny. Another lovely picture book based on the same psalm.
Son of Sniglet. I laughed, I cried, it became a part of me.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed The Horse and His Boy when I read it aloud to Pure Luck. He was a Tolkien kid, and I was a Lewis kid; we have managed to double each other’s mythological worlds! Prince Caspian seemed boring when I was young, but I enjoyed it much more as an adult.

I wrote my first book report ever on Charlotte’s Web. What a great book.

My teacher read Charlotte’s Web out loud to us in the third grade. I remember her crying at the end. I was kind of scared about a grownup crying in class.

  3. 3 Mamala

    Ah, yes, Charlotte’s Web… I so want J & J & C to love this book too!

I didn’t know The Runaway Bunny was based on Psalm 139. Makes me love that book even more!

i can read charlotte’s web silently and not cry, but whenever i read it aloud i cry enough to need to stop reading (and gather my feelings and pour cold water on them before i continue). i love that book. and when people mean a lot to me i ponder what to write about them in my web above their stall at the state fair.

My fourth grade teacher read a portion of Charlotte’s Web to us every Friday afternoon. I guess my school was not as progressive as PPB’s.

One of my first bookreports was also on Charlotte’s Web. It began a lifelong mistrust of animal stories. (The animals always die. Always. Even when they don’t, they still die.)

SpookyRach, I’m with you on the animal stories. After my woeful weeping over the death of Jack, the brindle bulldog, in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “By the Shores of Silver Lake,” my mother began a censorship campaign against animal books and kept them from me. A good move. I still go to pieces over animal’s deaths. When reading “The Lovely Bones” I didn’t cry until an animal died, despite the other heartbreaking material in the story. So I’m still wimpy, probably even moreso since I got dogs of my own.

Glad to see the party is continuing in my absence. I’ll check in when I can; in the meantime, enjoy some finger foods, drink up, and don’t leave TOO much of a mess.

  10. 10 Friday Mom

Oh, good I got here in time for the food. Do I still have to say something meaningful about this book meme? Not sure I can. I’m such a lightweight with the books, I can’t get the meme done. Pretty sorry admission for a PhD student, no?

  11. 11 Cheesehead

Okay…I’m back for a second drink. Is there any wine left? I know RM isn’t drinking, so I’ll have her glass.

  12. 12 Princess Mindy

I brought in rice crispie treats. I have to make them and then take them somewhere. If I don’t, I eat them until I make the roof of my mouth raw. So eat up! Songbird, wasn’t The Lovely Bones such a good odd book?!?!?!

  13. 13 Songbird

Yes, it really was. I didn’t expect to like it, because I really don’t care for violent books/movies, but I loved her concept of heaven.

we’ve just moved from a downsized townhouse to a full-sized house on a lake and we’re in the process of getting all of our books back in the same neighborhood. (some had been stored for the last 2 years.) it makes my heart sing to have them back together. (i think they missed each other as much as i missed them.)

and my first official act (involving the county govt.) was to get a library card. what a nerd! a wonderfully bookish nerd!
