I’ve had an itch to blog, but have come up short on topics. But a good kid update functions much like a survey does—instant topic, no muss, no fuss. Plus it keeps the Grands and Aunties happy.

It’s hard to believe this time last year I was keeping little mental lists of new words C was saying, when now I’m keeping mental lists of entire songs she knows how to sing. The kid sings all the time. In the car, in the bath, while playing. She also makes up lyrics to familiar tunes. And may I brag, she has outstanding pitch for a 28-month old.

A few of her standards:

  • This Old Man (which frequently morphs with the Barney theme, e.g. “I love you, you love me/Wee-wee [sic] happy family/With a knick-knack paddywhack…”
  • Alphabet Song (or Twinkle Twinkle, or Baa Baa Black Sheep—no morphing)
  • Spirit of the Living God (I kid you not)
  • Down in the River to Pray (ditto)
  • Sing, Sing a Song (Sesame Street fave—usually needs mommy/daddy to sing along, otherwise she gets into an infinite loop near the middle)
  • Peace of God (a song some treasured sister-friends wrote for me before she was born, sung to the tune of Edelweiss)
  • You Are My Sunshine
  • God Our Father, God our Mother (mealtime prayer sung to the tune of Frere Jacques/Where is Thumbkin, which she also knows)
  • Happy Birthday (she loves singing happy birthday to Jesus—I do not know why)
  • Swing Low, Sweet Chariot
  • Amazing Grace, v. 1
  • I’m a Little Teapot
  • several Kindermusik songsAnd more! Buy your copy today, on K-tel records. Please, no CODs.

C’s current favorite game that I hope isn’t warping her
Me: C, come give me a kiss.
    C: No.
Me: [incredulous] No?????? [feigning loud but ridiculously fake-sounding sobs]
    C: [wide-eyed concern] What’s wrong?
    Me: C won’t give me a kiss…
C: [gives me a kiss] Silly game!

fast-forward twenty years to C telling a therapist: I’ve always been a people-pleaser. It all started with this game…

    fashion sense
Grammy sent her some red and white polka-dotted Minnie Mouse socks from Disneyland. She wanted to put them on right away, and I suggested she pose for a picture to send to Grammy. She said, “Wait!” and ran and grabbed her red hat. Ah. Perfect.

    what she’s reading
    A great many things, including:
    Kitten’s First Full Moon
    Where is God?
    I Howl I Growl
    Starting Life: Butterfly
    In the Night Kitchen

    End update.

Post edited to add a “fashion sense” section (for those who’ve already visited).

It sounds like C is quite the singer (and quite the religious singer at that!) I sang all the time when I was little too, but my parents thought I was tone deaf.

I think this is one of several fashion sense stories, yes?

Music and fashion—perhaps a future in MTV!

Ah, I am Full-filled! I need to book a trip VERY soon!

      Re: The kissing game.

Teaching her it’s fun to withhold affection, huh?

      Possible career choices:

      1. A beautiful, poised sixth grade social studies teacher on whom even the future gay boys will have crushes.

      2. My sister-in-law

      3. A Dominatrix/SM Mistress

C, the world is your oyster…now tease it into giving you a pearl.

    5. 5 Matthew

I should make a trip up there to hear this in person. :-)

      You’re welcome anytime!

In fact I think Katieg and fam are thinking about a Thanksgiving visit. Why don’t you come then?

In the meantime, I wish there were some way to have recordings available for download. Some of it is hilarious. (I know there is some way, I should say some way for ME to do it.)

      Oh - I Howl I Growl! I’m so glad she’s enjoying it.

I hope to read it to her in person soon (more on that in email!)
