We’ve got an e-mail list of friends from college that has been going strong for some 13 years. We’ve gone through undergrad, graduate school, new jobs and relocations, marriages, and kids together. We’ve had our share of tragedy–we’re getting to the age where we’ve had a couple of parent deaths as well. And so it goes.

The Poohbah of the list (yes that’s his nickname, and it’s rightly deserved) suggested we put together a CD Club, where each of us signs up for a specific month and puts together a mix CD for the rest of the group. We’ve been going for a few months, and it’s been fun. Some people do themes, others just put together enjoyable stuff.

So we signed up for May, but had to ask for an extension. Seems appropriate for a college-related group; I was all about the extensions in college. Anyway, we are finally finishing up. Here’s our lineup.

If any of my blog regulars would like me to send you a copy, let me know, and I’d be glad to.

Songs for a Saturday Afternoon

(approach: relatively laid-back, mostly acoustic tracks that you might listen to while running errands in the car, or while hanging out at home)

Blow ‘Em Away — David Wilcox
…because nothing ruins a Saturday afternoon outing like an unexpected traffic jam.

The Moon Over Tucson — Carrie Newcomer
…because “the moon don’t care if the water’s not there, it’s high tide”;
…and because she’s RM’s favorite singer-songwriter, bar none.

Man Of Constant Sorrow — The Soggy Bottom Boys
…because “Soggy Bottom” has great assonance.

Don’t You Hate It (When They Make You Sing Along) — Modern Man
…because admit it, you do.

Stupid Song About Texas — Austin Lounge Lizards
…because they’ve got the place nailed. And we miss it for some crazy reason.

Conversation with the Devil — Ray Wylie Hubbard
…because “Devil Went Down to Georgia” deserves a part II.

World Leader Pretend — REM
…because even though they suck now, they were prescient then.

The Christians and the Pagans — Dar Williams
…because Dar rocks, and this song is delightful.

[name and title removed for privacy]
…because RM went to seminary with him and he’s wicked cool.

Dancing Barefoot — U2
…because we bet you probably don’t have it.

Mars — Lori McKenna
…because it epitomizes Saturday afternoon chill.

Babylon — David Gray
…ditto.

Polka Dots — Kami Lyle
…because I thought she was a one-album wonder, but turns out she has a new album coming soon! And she plays the trumpet. How cool is that?

Galileo — Indigo Girls
…because it’s just a fine song.

One — Billy Jonas
…because you can’t sit still when you hear it, and you need the exercise.

Spontaneous Human Combustion — The Bobs
…because although [a classmate from college] does the definitive version, this one’s pretty good.

I’m God — Modern Man
…because Modern Man deserves two songs on this CD.

Water Is Wide — Indigo Girls, Jewel, Sarah McLachlan
…because those are some righteous harmonies.

The Yes of Yes — Carrie Newcomer
…because we’re winding down, and this quiet little lullabye is a Song That Cannot Be Improved Upon™.

Start With The Ending — David Wilcox
…because it is,
The End.

I love so many of those. *Especially the Soggy Bottom boys and the movie that was in is one of my favs!) I will happily pay for postage if you will send me one!

  2. 2 SpookyRach

Sign me up. I haven’t heard anything by several of these artists, so I am excited to experience new stuff.

    Thanks!!

  3. 3 Revmom

    Sign me up, too!

  4. 4 Keith

The only one I know is MAN OF CONSTANT SORROW.

But I do have three versions of it.

  5. 5 mark

i think i count as a blog regular… although i might not comment very often… but i wouldn’t mind being exposed to some new artists. let me know what you need from me so that i can get in on the saturday afternoon groove, too!!!

  6. 6 Mamala

    Me too, I want one.

  7. 7 CG Auntie

Not surprised that RM and R compiled a kick-ass list of songs. You’ve got some of my favorite artists and you even picked some of my favorite songs (how thoughtful of you!) I’d like to pick up my copy in about a week!

  8. 8 anne

me too, please and thank you.

  9. 9 reverendmother

I had no idea there would be interest in our weird taste in music. Then again, who can resist free stuff!

OK, I should probably cap this at 10 or something. I know that, realistically, it will be R burning all those CDs on my behalf. And I could never allow anyone to pay for postage, unless you live on Neptune.

So far I’ve got Mindy, Rach, Revmom, Mark, Mamala, CG Auntie (for pickup), and Anne (also for pickup if we get it done in time). Keith was cagey, I can’t tell if he would like one too. So I’ll take three more, two if Keith wants one.

Edited to add: Please e-mail me your address. I will not sell or distribute your address to anyone. In return, please do not turn me in to the Evil Record Companies.

  10. 10 Judy

I’d be interested as well, if you don’t mind. Thanks!! I’ve heard of some of the groups, but not that many, but am always interested in different music.

  11. 11 pastorg

Am I number 10? If so, I’d love one! And you will be getting a box at some point as well - sweaters and such and other goodies that we don’t want to move. I’m sending it slow motion (ground) b/c it is very heavy with the Kittel’s and such. You’ll get it before the new little one arrives! :0)

  12. 12 rev mommy

    Me! Pick me!

  13. 13 reverendmother

And rev mommy makes it in under the wire, with or without Keith. And that’s the game folks. Join us next time, for Free Music Extravaganza. I’m your host, RM, saying, keep coming back, it works (if you work it).

  14. 14 Keith

Oh, sorry! I’m always the Copyright Police online, so as much as I’d like to hear it, I’ll pass. Thanks, though.

OK, I am one or more of the following choices because I only recognize the name of one of the artists and I can’t say that I would even recognize one of their tunes:

    A. Getting old

    B. Seriously out of touch

    C. Way too busy, since the only music I have listened to has been the symphony on date nights with hubbie

    D. Have children of the wrong age to clue me in to other types of music

    E. Not as worldly as I once thought

I will use your choices as a way to broaden my musical horizons…..Where should I start?
