For your part, it was no different from any other day:
careful inspection and clucks of approval.
And I, I feel
your pink heft in my aching arms,
feel your cheek, not languishing on my shoulder,
but bobbing against my own, and I know you are doing well,
scooting through the list of What to Expect.
The exam yielded no surprises for either of us
until the end, when four efficient needles
plunged one by one into oblivious flesh, and
I stared into your eyes dreading the end of that baby bliss.
I don’t know what you took from the experience
besides four round bandages,
bull’s-eyes set after the fact,
but I, I took the realization
that you now cry real tears.

the stats: weight 13#15oz., height 24 3/4 inches – both 95%

Oh, I remember those days. It really hurts, even in the face of good news about their health and development.

I used to cry when my babies had their shots…Can’t we come up with a better way to give babies (and adults, too) these vaccines?

On the other hand, what wonderful stats! She sounds like a true bundle of joy.

Oh, I remember that very first time I saw my baby bleed from a shot. Somebody plunged a needle into my child! I felt so wounded. I cried all the way home.

you all make me feel like a bad mom :( I didnt think much of the jabs at all. (I mean … the babies got over it very fast especially if you nursed them there and then! )

as I said, bad mom :(

(I guess I rationalised it too as being good for us, and for us all. )

RM - Well said. Of course after our last visit the shots were an afterthought.

95%! - I’ve got one of those. My advice is to schedule the massage therapy appointments now.

Why can’t they figure out a better way than shots for infants (or adults)???

Glad RB is doing well. Wish she didn’t have four little bandages. Yikes!
