No Apologies

Your What’s that? had always been met
with silky wonder, the unrolling of
a sacred scroll, explanation, unhurried;
This time the answer interrupted the question,
pierced it with a sharp point,
plunged-in, poison, on the arm;
your hand moved there, but could not
grasp the lesson, it was there and gone
too needle-fast, and mean,
the heartbreak so complete
it sounded like deep cackling
rising from some other place.
