• We had dinner last night with Dr. College Friend, who was in town for a conference. It was good to see him, although a bummer that we weren’t able to meet his spouse and son, who are staying in the area with her sister but were unable to make it last night. (And can I say how weird it is to have college friends who are, like, diagnosing people’s illnesses? This is a guy who threw up all over another friend’s dorm room after mixing vodka and chocolate milk.)Little she-who-is seemed very comfortable with him–let him hold her hand across the street while R parked the car, etc. I’ve tried to figure out what it is about certain people that determines whether she will feel comfortable and talkative or not. I have found, though, that the closer friends we are with the person, the more automatic the comfort level is–regardless of how different those friends are from one another. There’s some underlying kinship that she seems to pick up on. She was very comfortable with R’s brother last time we were with him, for example, even though he is a great big extroverted guy, which sometimes freaks her out. Fun.
  • The girls were out past bedtime, and little she-who-is cried when I dropped her at preschool. One thing that sucks about being the pastor: while the other moms can just leave the building, I had to hear her wailing all the way down the hall to my office. My spies tell me that when she walked in and saw the clay on the tables, she was fine, but I’m trying to decide whether a little time with mommy would be in order this afternoon. I have much to do but this seems important.
  • I already shared this at the RevGals 11th Hour Preacher Party, but while playing with a toy “laptop” this weekend, she pointed to the power button and said, “You press this buttom and the sermon pops out.” Don’t I wish it were that easy!
  • I’m singing with an 8-person a cappella ensemble for the worship services on December 17. Gosh, it feels great to sing again. In college sang with a 16-voice ensemble through the school of music–lots of standards and show tunes, and we danced too! Cheesy, enjoyable fun. There was another ensemble of about 20 members that did more classical pieces, but I think we were more popular in concert. Anyway, this piece reminds me of that group–lots of tight harmonies, though no dancing! We went through our parts yesterday afternoon, and I discovered I have the discordant note on the final chord. It feels a little like needing to sneeze but then not.
  • Both the divine miss m and R are sick again–or is it sick still? That’s a challenging thing about a family of four–keeping up with all the illnesses. Did they not kick the last thing or is this a new thing? And why do I keep being spared? (For those keeping score at home: R has chest coughing and M has the double-barrel snot.)

That must be hard. I called into church this morning and before the Nursery School director could speak into the phone, I heard her grandson crying, “Meeeemeeeee!!!” It’s hard to detach from our personal relationships in the workplace! I felt badly for both of them, as I do for you and She-Who-Is.

Double-barrel snot…has she discovered the magic of “sleeves” yet?

Blessings and anti-bacterial wipes for all and sundry. And afternoon play dates are as good for parents as they are for kids. :-)

Regarding your first point—my cats are the same way. We get hissing and freakouts if it’s a new person that I’m not well acquainted with. If it’s someone I know well, they jump into laps uninvited. I think the grownups (humans) send off some sort of a vibe that says “this one’s okay.”

“And why do I keep being spared?”

If you are like me, December 25th will be the end of your health run.

May it not be so… Lord, hear our prayer.
