• The divine miss m has been sleeping and eating poorly this week and is a little gunky, so we took her to the walk-in ped clinic. Three weeks ago we thought it was an eye infection and it turned out to be ears. This time we thought it might be ears again and it was eyes. Gah! At least we can tell when it’s something, even if that’s as perceptive as we get.
  • It’s supposed to do wintry mix Saturday night/Sunday morning, and I’m bummed. Our lent series on the creative arts begins Sunday morning with a guest presenter scheduled to talk about “Art and the Reformed Tradition,” with slides. And I am supposed to start the writing as spiritual discipline class, and I think it’s all gonna be poorly attended because of the weather. Poop. So much for momentum.
  • Have I shared my pre-decision on the magazine column? I’m going to work on several proposals of topics, and if I feel energy for one or more of them, I’m going to say yes.
  • The WaPo photographer is coming on Monday morning to take my picture. I have already enlisted a couple of my CGs to act in an advisory capacity. (Check out this aside if you don’t know what I’m talking about.)
  • Wow, I was in a foul mood today. And the children were extra irritating to boot. It’s not politically correct to say so, but let’s face it, sometimes the incessant “Mommy… Mommy… Mommy…” is like so many nails on the blackboard. And M took one 30 minute nap all day.
  • This is the first day since Lent started (OK, only two days ago) that I haven’t done morning pages. Does this point have any relationship to my bad mood? I wouldn’t be surprised. I have enjoyed this wonderful clarity the last two days, despite being slightly sleep deprived, and I think the free-flow gunk-clearing could have something to do with it.
  • The day ended on a good note though. After dinner we all got really silly, and R and I introduced C to that thing where you hide your arms behind your back and someone else crouches behind you and acts as your arms. He helped her eat a cookie that way, then she pretended to be my arms, which were of course too short to do much other than inadvertently cup my boobs. That was the end of that.
  • We’ll be watching the Oscars on Sunday, because it’s a tradition, but we have seen none of the films nominated for the major categories. How the mighty have fallen. Mamala is going to see all five tomorrow right in a row. Sweet.

Lucky Mamala…clearly she doesn’t have two weeks of reading for Early Christian History to catch up on, and a Hebrew quiz on Monday…

    ;-)

I’m off to the movies! Can you believe that I saw all of the Live Action and Animated shorts last night at my favorite downtown theater with the rest of the movie geeks? Yes, it’s true… “West Bank Story” (a take-off of West Side Story with Palestinian/Iraeli “gangs”) and “The Danish Poet” were my favorites so we’ll see if they win Best Live Action Short and Best Animated Short respectively. All in all, there are some really creative people out there worldwide…watch out Pixar!

So, do we get to know Mamala’s picks?

Towanda, I’m with you. I’ve got a quiz in Hebrew tomorrow, too, plus NT plus Liturgics. So can we study while the TV is on, tuned in to the awards show?

    dang…I thought not.

I vote for Little Miss Sunshine for Best Picture, because I always vote for heart-warming indie films (even ones that use the F word liberally), and I vote for Helen Mirren for Best Actress, because she is the goddess of all of us mid-life women. If she doesn’t win, I want Judi Dench to win, for the same reason. I vote for Forrest Whittaker for Best Actor, because he has such incredible range, I vote for Jennifer Hudson for Best Supporting Actress because the girl can SING, I vote for Alan Arkin for Best Supporting Actor because I’ve loved his work for a zillion years and his character in Little Miss Sunshine was the fulcrum of the piece. Director? Scorsese, even though The Departed isn’t his best work, but he’s way overdue.

Goes without saying I’ll fall asleep before anything actually gets awarded…

RM, you’re doing a “Life is Short?” I love those! You’re the only person I know who could be succinct enough to be artful about it. When will it be in WaPo? (Fear not about the photo. You, with your gorgeous eyes, will look faaaabulous in the little picture.)

How many folks were there for your arts thing this morning? I did a presentation on Qatar and got two dozen, and was grateful for that…

Well, I’ll be reviewing Hebrew vocab and infinitives while the Oscars are on…TV and flashcards, it’s like they were meant for each other!
