Last night while putting little she-who-is to bed, the fan and nightlights in her room began flickering. They’d been doing this the last couple of days. R went to check out the circuit breaker and found that the big one that controls all the outlets and lights was making a disturbing buzzing/sparking noise. So we turned it off and went without power last night, with the blessed exception of the 220 stuff, which includes furnace, hot water and stove. Oh, and I guess we could have dried some clothes. All in all, not a bad way to go without. Lots of candles; we were asleep by 10:00. In fact I was thinking Wow, we should do this voluntarily every once in awhile!
The electrician is here as I type this. And he managed to find the right replacement breaker in his stash. “Truck never fails to amaze me,” he muttered as he went downstairs.
The divine miss m did not sleep well, however. We’re on our fourth, count ‘em, fourth ear infection. On the upside, we’re getting really good at identifying them these days. On the downside, yargh. We aren’t yet Talkin’ Tubes; the doc wants to get through the winter and see where we are. She seems to kick them fine—when we’ve taken her for re-checks or for regular appointments, her ears have been clear. She just seems to get them a lot. We are now in follow-up mode—he wants to see her in three to four weeks.
Let there be light! Eureka!

» I have been remiss in posting SBJ’s latest stats: 23 pounds and 27 inches at six months. Yes, I’ve got the big mama biceps.
» Aaaaaand little she-who-is lost another tooth this week!
» SBJ is four months old, 19 pounds 5 ounces, and 26 inches tall. GIGANTOR!

Our daughter had the same problem with her ears. For a while she was even on daily doses of penicillin, trying to avoid them. She finally seemed to outgrow them, just shy of the point at which we would have been talking the Tube option.
Then when our youngest had his first and second ear infections, in the space of a few months, I despaired, thinking we were starting over with that again. I happened to whine about it to my college roommate, now a pediatrician. She recommended avoiding cow’s milk and cheese– seems there’s something in them that can trigger problems in immature ears. So, we switched him to soy milk for a year or so– and he never had another ear infection.
Might be worth a try.
We wound up with three sets of tubes in the ears for my son. The culprits were milk, wheat and corn plus a major allergy to dust mites, grass, trees and our cats and dog. We covered his mattress and pillow with allergy resistant covers ( when we finally made this dicovery…son is now 19) and bought an air cleaner for his room. We decided the pets had to stay for our mental health just not in his room. We also took out the carpet in his room and tried to make his room as dust free as possible. We eliminated the offending dietary items from his diet. He eats normally now and outgrew the ear infections. God Bless you all.
When my little ones were having ear infections, and all three of mine had their fair share, we ended up buying a home otoscope –cost us less than 30.00 at the time - I followed the directions and found out what to look for, and then took it to the doctor and we reviewed it again, and it was a wonderful resource to have at home. I could call the doctor and let them know what I was seeing. Well worth the investment!
You can find them over the internet — home otoscope.
