the divine miss m…

…turned 15 months yesterday. 15 months plus 9 months is 24 months. Two years that this little critter has been in our lives.

…has a new tooth. It’s one of the canines, and the gums are actually triangular in that spot, with a little grain of white poking up. OUUUUUUUCH.

…had been invited to the sleepover at MaDear’s on Friday, but MaDear has a cold and is not going at full-tilt right now.

…feeds herself with a spoon, except when she’s really hungry, in which case the food is Not! Coming! Fast! Enough!

…is not content to climb up the stairs. She simply must walk. [Poink! Poink! Poink! That’s three, four, eighteen more gray hairs on my head.]

…was a sight when I picked her up this afternoon. Dusty from the sandbox and sticky from a popsicle and grinning her million-watt smile.

little she-who-is…

…was invited to take part in the now-infamous Palm Sunday Liturgical Dance. She and two other children will be brought in on the dancers’ shoulders while waving palms, then deposited in the chancel for the rest of the dance.

I explained the whole thing to her, emphasizing that the room would be full of people watching this take place, and asked her what she thought:
“Yes, I would love to do that.”
[later] “I might feel shy about it though.”
Me: Well, what would you do if you felt shy?
C: I’d do it anyway!

I’ll let you know.

…is learning, along with her mother, the major challenge to the supposedly foolproof container garden.
Squirrels.
They appear to be digging for goodies. It’s impossible to tell whether they actually found anything. Carrot seeds are so small, they must be really hard up.
Me: C, what are we going to do about these pesky squirrels?
C: [folding hands] Dear God, please make the squirrels go away. Amen.
R: It’s either that or electrified chicken wire.

…has age-induced OCD or something. Certain bedtime phrases must be repeated verbatim. Good night, sleep tight, see you in the morning.

reverendmother…

…received another nast-e-gram today that she did NOT respond to via e-mail except to say “I will talk to you in person about this tomorrow.” SCORE!
RM—modeling assertiveness, one unanswered e-mail at a time

…is pleased that her writing class wants to continue after Easter.

…is excited because the Lent Series is almost over.

…played Vanna White to saying grace’s Pat Sajak at Crankypants Presbytery last evening.

…got together with her writing revs today (minus two) and got some great feedback on the series of bible columns, the outline for which is due this week.

Love these sniglets from your life. Love, love, love them!

With both my younger ones I had to repeat, the exact same prayer each night, phrase by phrase (different for each child) for almost a year.

Maybe there is something developmentally OCD about being 3 or 4 years old!

  2. 2 sherry

It is true that this behavior is very typical of 3 and 4 year olds. I have always preferred to call it liturgical, not OCD.

  3. 3 sherry

I didn’t mean that to sound snippy. I just love the way that age seeks comfort in their discovery of the world by making what they already know completely predictable and safe.

    I like R.

  5. 5 reverendmother

I like “liturgical” a lot! …even though my spiritual inner child is Quaker, not Episcopalian ;-)

  6. 6 ppb

Perhaps C’s spiritual inner child is Episcopalian. She likes repetition and is intrigued by processions!

  7. 7 reverendmother

    Indeed!

She’s also very interested in the whole anointing with oil thing. Always brings out the vial of oil I keep in my desk.

that line about the “electrified chicken wire” made coffee come out my nose…

  9. 9 sherry

If she like processions, you all should come to Mardi Gras one year.

The first time I took my husband (raised Roman Catholic) to my Episcopal church he leaned over to me at the end of the service and asked “Do they parade every week?”

I love that she prayed about a problem!

I also love that R was so ready with (cough) an answer that prayer…

Good work on the nast-e-gram! I did something similar, though with more response, and then was sad I didn’t have the guts to do what you did. Next time…

  11. 11 Mamala

I had the “workday from hell” today at work, as I’m being sucked in to workplace drama, whether I want it or not! I need both girls at my place for a sleepover tomorrow night as a sort of “anti-corporate, view the world from the eyes of a child, cuddle-up time” to expunge ‘the man’ from my body and move on…my cold is gone, too.
