- Laptops are great things—connect with the world and your job without leaving your bed.
- I’m totally off codeine after last evening’s unpleasantness. But Motrin is working fine. The only pain I feel in my mouth is a sore spot on my tongue from a sharp corner of the mouth guard. By the end of today I predict I’ll have ditched the guard; the roof of my mouth is tender but not sore.
- I would love some fried chicken right now. And nachos. I hardly ever eat either.
- I miss the girls. R got them ready and out the door all by himself.
- This afternoon’s lay-around activity—start (re-)watching the Harry Potter movies. Did I tell y’all that I’m planning a three-week sermon series in early July on HP? In honor of book 7 and movie 5. It will be just me since Senior hasn’t read any of the books. I’m nervous because I really don’t want it to be gimmicky, I want it to be a fun and lighthearted way to acknowledge a rather huge cultural event, yet meaningful for people who’ve read the books and for those who haven’t. And appealing to people who don’t come to church. It will be a fun challenge. My working title for the series is “Heaven, Hell and Hogwarts,” but I’m not sure that’s quite right.

» I have been remiss in posting SBJ’s latest stats: 23 pounds and 27 inches at six months. Yes, I’ve got the big mama biceps.
» Aaaaaand little she-who-is lost another tooth this week!
» SBJ is four months old, 19 pounds 5 ounces, and 26 inches tall. GIGANTOR!

RM…glad you are feeling better.
The Harry Potter sermon series sounds great! I have read all the books twice…and am re-reading the whole series to lead up to book 7. Sounds kind of “nerdish” doesn’t! Tee hee!
Rowling has some powerful images of love and suffering in her books.
I look forward to the sermons.
Keep resting.
Sounds like you are healing up well. Yay!
Ooooo, please print that sermon series. One of my teen’s major rants is how the Potter series is banned and panned by the fundies around this area of the country. Witchcraft, work of the devil, etc etc
cool!
Harry Potter in church -whatever next? is this decision codeine based??? (grin)
seriously like the title -and would be interested in hearing /reading the sermons … because I can’t imagine a chuch in Finland doing something as radical as this.
We talk outreach and bridging the divide - but ….
well anyway
get well soon so you can eat chicken and nachos!!! and be good to yourself
our pastor did a series of classes (~7 or 8 ) on the harry potter series and it gave me a much deeper appreciation of the books/movies/author/ideas. i know he had some outside source that he used. if you’re still looking for outside source material i’ll give you his email address (not here). the hp series is deep and wide!
healing thoughts are coming your way.
that little face is supposed to be the number eight.
I fixed it, anne—how funny that WordPress presumed that the 8 followed by ) was supposed to be a sunglass smiley!
Lorna, rest assured that I hatched this plan several weeks ago, in as sober a mind as I ever am
In fact I have been pondering it for many months. The fact that the book and movie are coming out within days of each other nudged me to finally do it.
There is a book, The Gospel According to Harry Potter, that I have—any other resources would be appreciated, especially since that resource only goes through book 4.
I imagine most people will be excited, receptive, or indifferent; I anticipate one or two people will be in a twist over the witchcraft thing. My first question for them will be, Have You Actually Read the Books? And if they have, I will be happy to engage them further.
cool HP idea! Please do tell us more as it gets closer.
I am thinking of doing a class this summer on the same topic.
And Amy and I were discussing writing a book about a Youth Ministry model based on Harry Potter. Granted, it was late at night when we were talking about this (too late) but the possibilities were actually sounding credible and possible. hmm…
Teri, you just reminded me that in seminary I wrote a chapter-by-chapter guide for parents to book 1. Includes synopsis of chapter, moral values explored, sample activities/discussion questions, and a scripture passage. Let me know if you ever want it.
Unfortunately I’m five books behind now—and Sorcerer’s Stone was one of the SHORT ones.
I just finished watching the first movie and the question is, do I even bother watching the second?… Not my fave.
Hope you feel better soon!
Are you anywhere near a JambaJuice? Their smoothies are really yummy, and some of the varieties are even (relatively) nutritious!
Panic set in last night as I realized I was one book behind; so I have just started to read Book Six. Even with my slow speed, I should finish by July. B already has our order in with Amazon to ship Book 7.
Don’t give up ice cream, even for nachos and fried chicken.
woodstock, I LOVE Jamba Juice; alas, there is none nearby.
F2B, I would NEVER give up ice cream!!!
I’m so glad to hear that you’re healing up nicely rm!
I really enjoyed The Gospel According to Harry Potter. I thought it was a great approach to the series.
Sounds like a good series. Can’t wait to hear more about it.
