aside: scripture hunt
Published by reverendmother 1 year, 4 months agoOn another note—can someone help me find any Bible passages suggesting that people were expecting the second coming to be imminent? Jesus, Paul, anyone? I think the cites are there but I’m drawing a blank.

» I have been remiss in posting SBJ’s latest stats: 23 pounds and 27 inches at six months. Yes, I’ve got the big mama biceps.
» Aaaaaand little she-who-is lost another tooth this week!
» SBJ is four months old, 19 pounds 5 ounces, and 26 inches tall. GIGANTOR!

My guess is that it’s in the Bible or shakespeare. One of the two.
In all seriousness, all i can think of are all those—any time bible verses, which some take as being next week and some next millenium. But I’m not the bible scholar (Matt 24:38-42, Luke 12:40, Mark 13:32-33, but smart bible chick that you are, youknew those already.
I remember a prof saying that was the reason why, in Corinthians, Paul argued for people not to get married. Jesus was on the way back, so no need for that whole marriage thing. Look in Corinthians first. Jesus had no idea when it would be
I wonder if it’s John 21:20-23 where Jesus says the Beloved Disciple will remain until he comes. I have something in my brain, but can’t shake it loose, and I have to run out the door or I’ll be late. Will think about it some more later if no one else comes up with something.
There’s little bit of that in Rom 13: 11-14. I would definitely explore more Paul.
Thank you invisifriends! That’s all very helpful.
what about the passage about not knowing the times? (Jesus) … there’s also something in Thess I think. will check and come back .. but toniht the ballet. rejoice with me
1 Thessalonians has a whole bit where Paul is writing to them about how upset they are that some folks have died before the second coming… especially chapter 4, towards the end. You have to read a little bit between the lines, then on into chapter 5 as well.
Thessalonians….both of ‘em. Ask Crusty Ol’ Sem Profs BJ or SS or see things they have written on them thar books.
And Revelation - esp. chapter 22:20….a
Also Colloquium touched on old and new creation - Barbara Rossing argues that the NEW heaven is not brand new but is a renewed creation. Revelation and Apocalypse (inbreaking/revealing, something being revealed) is one of her areas of expertise and as I recall in the panel this morning she affirmed that no where in Scripture does it say that God will destroy the earth (remember the post-flood promise) in the process of the final coming/new heaven - blame Darby for that.
As isolated bands of believers, few in number, no doubt it was tempting to believe the return would be soon - to get out from under Rome’s rule and dominion among other things.
Peace, RM - and continue to heal, to dream, to freshen your face with tears of annointing and compassion.
Maybe some of the references in our text about eschatology will be in with sections which will be helpful. As I said, these were mainly related to eschatology.
Some references used were Rev. 20, Luke 17:21, Luke 23:43, Matt. 10:28 ff, Col. 1:27-28, Matt. 24:6-7, 2 Thes. 2:1-12, 1 John 4:17
