Wow, the idea of “time” is enough of an interest of mine that it warrants its own blog category. And the title “it’s about time” has been used at least once before on these pages.
Anyway, what I pitched to the editors of Denominational Magazine is a series of ten articles exploring different scriptural perspectives on time. My experience as a pastor has suggested that time is a huge spiritual issue for people.
From the proposal:
- It’s been suggested that our checkbooks are theological documents, reflecting our faith and our priorities. So are our calendars. How we spend our time—indeed, how we view time—has profound spiritual implications for us as followers of Jesus, the One who was “in the beginning with God” and who also became flesh and lived as one of us.The issue of time touches us all, regardless of life circumstance. This series is for the working couple who struggles to find time for one another, for the mother who watches her young children grow up “in a blink of an eye,” for the man facing retirement and wondering how best to spend his jubilee years, for seniors looking back over a full life and wondering about their legacy, for pastors who seek to minister to the chronically busy and the stressed out—and who are chronically busy and stressed out themselves… and for many others.
This series will explore a variety of scriptural perspectives on time— God’s relationship to time, our attitude towards time, Jesus’ approach to time, and how to reclaim time as a gift.
There are columns on kairos and chronos, sabbath, the role of memory, eschatology, hurry, and multitasking (fun to find scriptures for those last two!)
I heard back from the editor today (finally? when you’re waiting for feedback, time moves slowly!) and she was enthusiastic. My challenge will be to focus. The topic is rich; the subtopics are also. Some of them overlap. My concern was that the topic was too specific, but the more I kept digging, the more angles I saw.
So, It’s About Time. I’m sure I’ll be writing more about that in this space.

» I have been remiss in posting SBJ’s latest stats: 23 pounds and 27 inches at six months. Yes, I’ve got the big mama biceps.
» Aaaaaand little she-who-is lost another tooth this week!
» SBJ is four months old, 19 pounds 5 ounces, and 26 inches tall. GIGANTOR!

That sounds really interesting. (And it might save me some research time, as I brushed up against kairos/chronos in the novel I’m supposedly writing.)
Any idea at what chronological juncture they might begin appearing?
Ah, ’twill be in the fullness of time.
Next ‘academic’ year.
Maybe by then I’ll be back to the novel.
Congratulations, BTW.
That sounds fascinating! Maybe you could get permission to post the articles on this website (or on another, “writer” website to promote your writing!) after they appear in print. Because I’d love to read them, but, um, I don’t see myself signing up for a subscription to Denominational Magazine (whatever it may be) anytime soon…
I’m with Kate…Longing to read them, when the tiime is ripe…but access to the printed version might be tricky for a UK Anglican…
look forward to this
and what Kate and Kathryn said - hope they allow you to post them in some form or other
… or then we’ll need private emails
