• We had a big meeting at church on Saturday so C&M spent the night at MaDear’s. It didn’t go quite as smoothly as last time. M was up throughout the night for some reason. Could’ve been teeth or the teething fever she had; she might have gotten overtired from only having two 30-minute naps the day before; she might have felt disoriented, though she was fine the first time she slept over there; or she didn’t like sharing a bed with anyone—again, though she did so without a problem the first time.

Or, she is a homebody to the extreme, with whom it will always be a challenge to travel. /catastrophizing

But in typical can-do fashion, MaDear went out this weekend and bought a bunch of supplies to have at her house to make sleepovers easier—toothbrush and toothpaste, hairbrushes, diapers, etc.

  • M has learned to nod, and uses the gesture appropriately. Though it’s not a head thing so much as a bobbing the entire torso up and down thing. As R put it, “We’ll be sad when that gesture goes away.” Adorable. And it is so fun to be able to communicate better with her. She has started using a few more word-like sounds too: uh-oh is getting more distinct, as is kitty, and C’s name. She can also point to her belly, her nose, and a couple other body parts when prompted.
  • C got to hang out with my Uncle T this weekend. She warmed to him quickly, which is no surprise—he is a natural around kids. Fun and with a generous portion of patience. I remember when I was about C’s age, the endless “Uncle T is always RIGHT!” Uncle T is always WRONG!” pseudo-arguments he and I would get into. Now that I am an adult I realize how tedious that must have been. But as a kid? Hours of hilarity. Seeing C with him brought back good memories of that.
  • The night after the sleepover, C slept until 8 and M slept until 8:40. Wow, tired maybe? But C actually got up and fed the cats (normally her job) all by herself, before waking R. Isn’t that so grown up?
  • Speaking of cats, they were beside themselves with anxiety the night the girls were gone. It was actually the stand-offish one that wailed the loudest, going from room to room. It was sweet.

I think M just wanted to stay up and party down and she was protesting that C and I were party poopers…she puts the “party” in slumber party! ;-)

  2. 2 Matthew

Can’t believe M is starting to talk. She’ll be a regular wordsmith the next time I see her.

  3. 3 Free to Be

Can’t wait to see M’s nod. I have noticed that she is able to express an rejection of a specific food quite effectively with a combined pushing it away with her hand and looking at it with definite distaste!
Not surprised kitty is a first word. She is so gentle and adoring of them (most of the time.)
