For the poetry workshop we received a freewriting prompt, to write a poem incorporating the words yes, once, circle and voice. Here is my (unedited) piece about going to see fireworks last night near the airport.

in the park at the airport’s edge
the plane bears down on us,
but for a few moments more,
i hear your voice leaking
into the silence which is quickly
dissolving in the engine’s roar;
to your uncle you say, “Yes! Again!”
and he lifts you up, waits,
then tosses you
and you grasp once more
for the belly of the screaming beast.
you miss, and i breathe again,
until the next trio of lights peeks over the trees,
banking its determined circle, toward the destination,
toward your hopeful arms.

    It’s beautiful. I love “and i breathe again.” It sums up the thrill and fright of a mom watching her child on a spectacular night.
