First, thanks for the feedback on the “whaaaa?!” post. Having received confirmation that I’m not way off base, it’s only fair to take it down and speak to the person directly.
We are just about packed. I have a new raincoat with liner, a loaner cross-shoulder bag (two, actually, from two clergy friends—maybe I’ll bring both; haven’t decided which will be better), and a gorgeous colorful striped journal that will take the place of my trusty titanium friend for writing and recording memories from the trip. R is bringing Harry Potter 6 to read; I am bringing novel-to-be-determined, something light that I can leave behind to make more room for two copies of HP7 and any other mementoes.
R is a small business owner, and a one-man shop in fact, so he will be buying a European cell phone for emergencies. He won’t be fielding calls, but will check in with his assistant at a convenient time each day/two days to provide “continuity of service.” He also bought a wifi card for his Treo, which apparently means that he is Internet-capable wherever there’s a hotspot.
That said, I don’t plan to be on the Internet while I’m gone. Neither does he, except in emergencies. There are Internet cafes around and about and maybe I’ll post a mid-pilgrimage roundup, but I doubt it. Don’t everyone forget about me while I’m gone.
It will be strange not talking to the girls every day. We have been on trips away from them before, but we’ve always talked each day. This will be harder. But OK.
We have just a few more details—get a form notarized authorizing MaDear and G-mommy to act on our behalf if there’s something medical that happens with the girls; paying a few bills; two or three items at the church; eh, this is a boring list.
I’ll post a bon voyage-y message tomorrow.

» I have been remiss in posting SBJ’s latest stats: 23 pounds and 27 inches at six months. Yes, I’ve got the big mama biceps.
» Aaaaaand little she-who-is lost another tooth this week!
» SBJ is four months old, 19 pounds 5 ounces, and 26 inches tall. GIGANTOR!

OK, then, be off with ya! and don’t worry ’bout a thing. Between the 2 of us, we’ve successfully raised 6 kids, so your 2 will be no problem, given the wonderful start-up that you’ve given them.
Have fun, be safe, and come back safely to us in 10 or so days….
As if we would forget you! Have a great trip! Soak in the beauty of the area and all will be well with your girls who are in great hands!
we won’t forget you but we will miss you
The girls will have a GREAT time
come back rested and even more in love with Jesus than before you left!
you can always buy a phone card in the UK from a local provider and use that for cheap internal costs (like to the railway office etc .. and in an emergency back home! (this is assuming your cell has the possibility to change cards - all in Europe do … but we noticed in the US many were stuck with a certain provider and so we couldn’t insert our own card. Crazy)
I found two things that helped when I traveled across the pond without the kid(s).
We made a paper chain with a link for each day that we were gone. The kid(s) took one link off each evening before bed.
I bought a postcard each day (sometimes more than one) and wrote a note to the kid(s) on that day, but did not mail them. We read them together at bedtime when we returned.
Have a wonderful trip.
Mom—do the chain thing! I told C to put an X on each calendar day we’re gone, and I put a smiley face on the 31st (we return the 30th but they won’t see us until the next morning).
I am horrible about sending postcards; I usually just send them when I get back. So that’s a nice way to handle it.
happy, happy trails!
