I told C to put an X on each calendar day we're gone, and I put a smiley face on the 31st (we return the 30th but they won't see us until the next morning). We made a paper chain with a link for each day that we were gone. The kid(s) took one link off each evening before bed. I bought a postcard each day (sometimes more than one) and wrote a note to the kid(s) on that day, but did not mail them. We read them together at bedtime when we returned. Have a wonderful trip. (this is assuming your cell has the possibility to change cards - all in Europe do ... but we noticed in the US many were stuck with a certain provider and so we couldn't insert our own card.
