Well friends, as I prepare for the birth of BB, it’s time to simplify life, step back from the Friday Five, and let one of the other capable and creative RevGals take the helm. It’s been a great almost 17 months of co-hosting the F5, but it’s time to say goodbye… so here’s my swan song.


On Endings and Goodbyes:

1. Best ending of a movie/book/TV show
You can’t beat the last paragraph of Charlotte’s Web:

    She was in a class by herself. It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer. Charlotte was both.


2. Worst ending of a movie/book/TV show

My first answer:
I really wanted to like Pay It Forward, but the ending just blew it. Or maybe it just blew. Isn’t that the movie where Kevin Spacey’s career jumped the shark?

Upon further reflection, how could I forget:
I hated, hated, hated the ending of Pretty in Pink. WTF? His name wasn’t Blaine, it was BLAND. Duckie was Andie’s lobster. End of story. (gratuitous Friends reference*)

Thank God John Hughes made Some Kind of Wonderful a few years later (a superior movie IMO) and he got that ending right.

*And while we’re on the topic of Friends, I wasn’t wild about how that show ended either. OK, Ross/Rachel were meant to be together. I can accept that. But after all the growth and independence Rachel had achieved, couldn’t they have her get on the damn plane?! Let the woman soar!

3. Tell about a memorable goodbye you’ve experienced.
Every year in college our group of friends would take a tour of the campus the night before graduation, staggering walking from place to place and enjoying the memories. We always jumped up and down in unison outside the building with the seismograph, and we always got fake arrested by the campus police. Occasionally we “broke into” the stadium and rushed the field.

It was a great, silly sendoff.

4. Is it true that “all good things must come to an end”?
My marriage is good, so I hope not. (Awwww… gag)

Discuss.
You know, I don’t think this is true of me. I certainly have habits and patterns I’d like to get rid of. But I think once I decide to get rid of them, I don’t look back. Now, deciding to rid myself of them in the first place takes enormous mental energy…

Bonus: “It isn’t over until the fat lady sings.” I’ve never loved this expression. So propose an alternative: “It isn’t over until ____________________”
I am the one who came up with this question, yet not a thing is coming to mind. Oh well.

R and I are off to Garrison Keillor-ville Friday to visit our new little nephew. It’s our last weekend away from the girls BBB (before BB). Everybody play nice while we’re gone.

    mmm… Kevin Spacey is kinda creepy sometimes i think. Aside from that…i can picture you on fridays now engrossed in sneaking into the stadium (babe in tow) rather than sitting at the computer for hours coming up with ways to entertain us right?

    Yeah. I didn’t like Friends ending either. Rach needed to becoem the independent go-getter and be wife and career girl too.
    What a fun way to end college years. I still have memories of my very last night at seminary in a friend’s room talking late at night. We discussed how our lives would be so different. Oddly enough we never would have guessed them to be as they are now.
    Maybe we should have staggered one last time around the D.

    Friends was on the network I didn’t get when I lived in South Dakota, so I didn’t get into it that much. so, I didn’t feel so connected to those people when I did finally watch. I’ll trust you. terrible ending.

    After coming out of the theater where Play It Forward was playing, I stepped into a bookstore and flipped through the novel it was based on. I don’t recall now what my specific objections were (I had problems with the movie all the way through), but as I suspected, they were addressed in the book.

    Hollywood messing up a novel. News flash.

    I knew it wasn’t a comedy line, but I so wanted Rachel and Ross to talk about their need for counseling if they were ever going to have a healthy relationship. I guess my desire for ‘real’ communication in a sitcome meant that I had in fact jumped the shark.

    As for the bonus, I’m not playing on my blog, but I thought of…

    It’s not over until the parking lot clique goes home? And calls their friends? And their friends call their friends? And for some reason something feels odd about church the next Sunday but one can’t figure out why? And finaly someone comes into one’s office to let one know what “everyone” is talking about? And one either calls a fellow clergy friend and moans or pours a drink or figures out a cleverly differentiated way to deal with the “discussion” or tenders a resignation?

    Of course, then it’s not really over… :)

    I actually like the saying “It isn’t over until the Fat Lady Sings” because it draws me back to J.D. Salinger and the Glass family, some of my favorite writings.

    Why does the picture on this post give me chills? I wonder what childhood memory is being triggered?
