1. How did you celebrate this time of year when you were a child?
We didn’t have many fall rituals, which is strange since it is my favorite (and Mamala’s favorite?) season.
2. Do you and/or your family “celebrate” Halloween? Why or why not? And if you do, has it changed from what you used to do?
We don’t get into Halloween too much. I mean, the kids dress up, and C goes trick-or-treating. I’ll be reading other answers for ideas! I think it is a fun holiday. It has become such an adult holiday, which is fine, but I’d like to preserve the innocent kid aspect of it.
3. Candy apples: Do you prefer red cinnamon or caramel covered? Or something else?
Great question. Caramel covered. Even better, slices dipped in caramel so you get plenty of sticky goodness with every bite. And, uh, you don’t get too messy that way. </anal>
4. Pumpkins: Do you make Jack O’ Lanterns? Any ideas of what else to do with them?
I never got into this, until we were invited to a pumpkin carving party at which they actually had proper tools, books with ideas, stencils, etc. Wow, that makes a huge difference!
As for what else to do with them, I love roasting pumpkin seeds as a snack.
5. Do you decorate your home for fall or Halloween? If so, what do you do? Bonus points for pictures.
We have a few Halloween decorations—very minimal. They haven’t even made it out of the attic this year! Too much going on.
6. Do you like pretending to be something different? Does a costume bring out an alternate personality?
I remember the year R and I went to Ribald College Party Written Up in Playboy Magazine when it was a James Bond theme. (ahem, James Bondage) There is an amusing picture somewhere of the two of us posing in our… trench coats.

» I’m looking for some new online reading materials–blogs, zines, whatever. Creative yet accessible, inspiring but not schmaltzy, smart but not impenetrable. Recommendations welcome.
» The latest on SBJ: at one year, he weighs 30.5 pounds (99%), is 32 inches tall (97%) and is 100% cute.
» I have been remiss in posting SBJ’s latest stats: 23 pounds and 27 inches at six months. Yes, I’ve got the big mama biceps.

Ooh! Pumpkin seeds! I forgot that was the real bonus of carving a pumpkin. We may just have to do it this year after all.
I didn’t know there was html code . hee
I can’t imagine why you couldn’t decorate right now.. I mean you only have 2 little ones with a third on the way!
Let your little ones see my youtube video of 5 little pumpkins.
I love pumpkin seeds too! Great play!
I’ve tried roasting pumpkin seeds and they either came out burnt or…just not right. Any tips? I like ‘em, and the store bought ones are too expensive. I’m stingy, but I also like homemade stuff. :=D
Wow. I have never been to a pumpkin carving party… stencils? tools? I am so low tech.
FUN!

Would love to see the pics!
One of the video shows had a lady who was “great ith child” and she painted a jack-o-lantern on her belly. It was cute and the baby came by C-section on Halloween. Don’t thin they named him Casper though
a pumpkin carving party sounds fun, not sure I’d manage anything creative tho- and I love pumpkin seeds!
That is strange that we didn’t have more fall rituals. It’s my favorite time of the year too. And I think I remember Luke saying something about it being his favorite time of year as well. Hmmm…
When the kids were younger, I’d make costumes for them. Although I hd fun doing all of them, the ones for my daughter were particularly over the top. Bridal gown and veil, Disney princess dresses. My 23 year old still cringes when I share pictures of him in green tights dressed up as Robin Hood. We never decorated much, but the costumes were great fun. One parent stayed home to hand out goodies, one walked the kids around the neighborhood. I miss it!
We’re having a big Halloween family event at Big Old Seminary, and an email was sent around asking faculty (who live in houses on the campus) if the little kids could ring their doorbells. Interesting to see who is willing to welcome little ghosts and goblins and who is not.
yes, I like the pumpkin carving party and roasting the seeds too. Sounds yummy!
I’m with you on preserving some of the innocence. One of my favorite things is seeing the little kids get dressed up. The big kids — not quite as fun.
Halloween is my wedding anniversary. Brings a whole new meaning to trick or treat.
I LOVE caramel dipping “sauce”…It’s good with apples too
Happy Halloween! QP
i’m so with you on the carmel dipping apples! our girl scout leader showed us the glory of it! we even sold some one year at a carnival–big hit!
great play!
