That was my text message to R, in answer to his question, “Will you be home in time for dinner?”
Unfortunately, what my brain thought it was responding to was, “Will you be staying in town for dinner?”
D’oh.
And I have been schooled by R’s saintly patience and good humor about this.
On the upside, I had […]

Item #1: Why typography matters
A bumper sticker:
Jesus Died for Me
and you
————————————–
Item #2: Stuck?
I haven’t written anything but random blogs for quite a long time. Is it the spiffy Moleskine that I’m too fussy about messing up? The fact that I’ve written 100 poems (according to my archives) and that milestone is psyching me out? Or […]

aside: time-suck

So I just got back from a retreat on the spiritual dimension of parenting at the local Catholic retreat center where I do spiritual direction. You know the type—Catholic through and through, complete with the pictures of Jesus and Mother Teresa, but when I asked about how they handle the Eucharist in regard to Protestants […]

aside: names

I wonder whether the advent of the Internet is having an impact on how many women are keeping their names after they get married. ‘Cause it sure is annoying not to be able to search for female friends of old who dropped their family name…

So when I feel like I’m doing the pregnancy waddle-step, I try to think of it as a swagger instead. It just makes me feel less frumpy, more “I own the room.” Hey, if menopausal women can have power surges, darnit, I can swagger.
I am better today, but moving slowly and carefully. I can put […]

I did something to my back. I think it happened on Friday. I woke up sore yesterday, but we went to the fall festival and to a church event in the evening. I was a little stiff but it felt good to walk around. But this morning I couldn’t move without sound effects, so R […]

who had the divine miss M by the hand as I was rushing around trying to find her*:
I was too relieved to say thanks, so, thanks. A lot.
*longest 90 seconds of my life

This would be my week to be “on” for the Friday Five. In solidarity with my able replacement:
1. What is your earliest memory of encountering a biblical text?
There are probably earlier events, but I remember most vividly sword drills in the Baptist Church. Someone calls out a verse and the kids all look it up […]

Eh, not much to say.
I am going through a round of submitting various things for publication. Which feels good, like something I should be disciplining myself to do, because it means setting goals and deadlines and revising. But it also feels like a colossal waste of time because I suck! My writing sucks! Nobody really […]

Quicksilver is my new MacBook Pro 15”. It’s quite speedy.
And it will actually operate while unplugged.
I can watch YouTube in real time, rather than hitting pause and waiting for the clip to download.
And the PCMCIA slot is not bent such that the wireless card won’t fit in it, which doesn’t matter because it has an […]

I think I’m the last one in blogland to do this:
Four Jobs I’ve Held:
ice cream scooper
preschool teacher
editor and reporter for a quarterly magazine
program coordinator at an interfaith organization
Four Films I Could Watch Over and Over:
Ocean’s 11
When Harry Met Sally…
The Philadelphia Story
Bull Durham
Four TV Shows I Watch:
Colbert Report (not every day)
Daily Show (not every day)
LOST
that’s it.
Four […]

aside: cooling off

I take some comfort in the fact that, while we’ve had 90 degree days this week, today (83) is probably the hottest I will ever be while pregnant again.

Marshmallow Pinwheels are really yummy cookies.
So the Viggo dream occurred Saturday night, which was also the night I slept almost 12 hours. Saturday was (supposed to be) our Sabbath day but we remembered the Green Festival was going on downtown, which we’d wanted to do. I agreed, knowing it was a three-day weekend and there […]

Thank you for visiting my subconscious last night.
It was rather random of you to drop by, but how nice to make your acquaintance.
Signed,
Me
P.S. Let me also express my gratitude that, although this:

is the look for which you are most famous (and about which I have written), you decided to tidy up for your dream appearance, […]

aside: especially for pastors

“Those in a ‘nurturing’ profession must know that they cannot be all things to all people… One of my college professors reminded us that there are only three emergencies in life: a heart attack, profuse bleeding, and a threat of suicide. All other concerns can wait until the next day. She also reminded us that people are usually more resourceful than we think. We are not indispensable.” —Patricia Robinson

So I’ve shared this in bits and pieces, but here is the skinny (bad pun) on RM at 32 weeks pregnant:
So at last Monday’s midwife appointment I again had the protein pee. Based on this, and the fact that my 24 hour test from two weeks ago showed protein (though not in alarming amounts), the […]

I went to hear Ann Patchett at the National Cathedral on Tuesday. She was speaking on creativity, her process of writing, and how the experience of writing fiction intersects with “real life.”
A few things that stuck out (quotes are approximate, it’s just easier to write in first person):
She didn’t know a thing about opera before […]

Cathy wants proof beyond any doubt. What happens when we hang the TP the other way? she wants to know.
Interesting that she should mention this, since yesterday R said, “You realize that if you reverse it, the design will be right side up on the hanging-down part.”
True enough. (Though upside down on the roll itself.)
And […]

Note the direction of the design (photo has been enhanced to show detail) and the fact that the toilet paper is hanging down front.
Quotidian Grace, Will Smama, and others… the defense rests.
Why yes, I don’t have much to blog this week, why do you ask?
