God have mercy on me; my husband indoctrinated me into the cult. All I did was open one silly little innocently-wrapped present!
It’s going to be hard to preach and teach on simplicity and downshifting one’s life now that I am in possession of an iPhone. Don’t I now represent the uber-plugged-in postmodern person?
I must […]
The first sentence of the first post from each month this year:
I am back with the kidlets. The travel was better than that of a week ago, even with only one parental unit. Grandmothers helped on each end of the trip.
tell me when it’s time,
i say;
Do you have ANY idea how tempting it was […]
Haven’t posted much, but we’re fine here. Had a great Christmas with ten people around the table yesterday. Very quiet today (which is saying something with three kids).
J is fussy right now and is walking the house with R, but he has generally turned a corner. We’re enjoying it while it lasts.
Tomorrow is M’s […]
After hitting bottom two nights ago with the sleep, sweet baby j woke up only once last night. The cluster-feeding has improved as well.
Might we have turned a corner?
Even if it’s just a fluke, I’ll take it.
And he happily took another bottle. Of course I’m overjoyed for me, but also for R. Feeding a child […]
This is a Christmas gift for C (little she-who-is), who is afraid of Santa. The pseudonyms don’t quite work but you get the idea.
‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house
not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would […]
Dear sweet baby j,
First let me say that no son of mine will ever hear from me that he shouldn’t cry. If Rosey Grier can cry, so can you.
But it’s estimated that we will change your diaper 6,000 times, and if you’re going to cry every single time, it’s going to be a long childhood.
Really, […]
Today was mommy-daughter time with little she-who-is. Look what we made!
We’ve definitely refined our technique—I got the consistency of the icing better. Last year’s was the Salvador Dali house.
It took us all day: assemble walls, nurse J, put on roof, nurse J… etc.
And here is the side that M helped with:
In other tales of domesticity, […]
Sweet baby J took a bottle today on the first try!!!!!!!!! Glory, glory!!!
1. Choose the scenario which caused me to injure our minivan today:
a) I ran over our garbage can while backing out of our driveway
b) I scraped against a concrete post at the gas station
c) I backed into a parked car at Target
2. Which song from the Clear Channel Christmas repertoire gave me a lump in […]
Dear Big Sister M,
Thank you for the wakeup call this morning. I can think of no better way to say “Up and At ‘Em” than inhaling and exhaling into a harmonica 18 inches from the head. It’s like “Reveille” for the toddler set.
I appreciate you not wanting me to sleep the day away. Though I […]
Forget the baby monitor, sling, or bottle warmer. Here’s the techy stuff that a new mom really can use:
iPod. An obvious choice, perhaps, but indispensable for late-night nursing entertainment that doesn’t wake up wee bebe.
Bluetooth handsfree device for cell phone. Let’s face it, life is all about multitasking. Chat with a friend while putting away […]
As a child, I always loved Ernie, and found Bert to be rather bland and annoying.
As an adult, I find it’s the exact opposite.
I mean, Ernie is a pretty boorish roommate—playing his drums at all hours, interrupting Bert while he’s reading.
Meanwhile… Bert loves pigeons! And he collects bottle caps!
And need I even […]
It was a truly lazy day. I got a flu shot yesterday, which always makes me feel crummy. It’s such a gamble every year. If I don’t get the shot, I may avoid the flu altogether. Whereas if I get the shot, I’m guaranteed a micro-flu. Bleh. Aside from a quick trip to Trader Joes, […]
Kid for sale! Two weeks old, adorable, nurses All. The. Time.
And it seems like he’s always been with us.
Went to the ped today; all is well.
He has grown an inch—21.5 in.
He is 9 lbs 7 oz with a smallish head, compared to the girls’.
He’s perfect!
That’s all for now; I’m holding him and typing one-handed.
All is well. Not much exciting here.

Sweet baby J is a pretty laid-back dude. He is, amazingly, still in his same regular routine. He wakes up at 3:30 or so, regardless of what time we put him down—10 p.m. or midnight. So 10 p.m. is the goal, obviously. But the guy poops with every diaper […]
Frosty: The only place I won’t melt is the North Pole!
Oh, how I wish that were true…
The umbilical cord stump fell off last night. [sniff] My baby’s growing up!
It’s snowing!
Sweet baby J is (dare I say this out loud) developing a routine. Wakes up to nurse between 6:30 and 7 a.m., then dozes in our bed, then another snack and a morning nap, awake around 11:00 for quite a while, a couple of feedings close together, then a long afternoon nap, awake during […]
We are still cocooning around here.
Though I am on my way to the orthopedist to finally get the foot looked at. Hoping it’s not a drawn-out process. R is bringing J along so that I can meet all his snacking needs.
He is getting into a rhythm. Longer periods of sleep interspersed with some frequent feeds. […]
