Remember when I used to write about stuff other than my children?
Yeah. That was awesome.
So I have five weeks of maternity leave left. The girls are still at ’school’ full-time these days, since I am still at a full-time salary level at the church, and it’s a blessing to have some time just with The Boy. Once I go to part-time, at least one of the girls will reduce their days there, which means that right now, life is as conducive as it will ever be to getting some things done and organized around the house. So, in between my busy schedule of napping and watching ER and Law and Order reruns, I have decided to spend a little time getting the house in order. So I’ve been doing stuff like cleaning out the cabinets under the bathroom sinks, organizing the pantry (or at least throwing away three-year-old boxes of breadcrumbs, etc.), and so on.
We are hoping to get the first level of our house painted this month. It’s been a dingy and depressing white for too long. I’ve also been looking at curtains for the living room and toy storage for the family room, some light fixtures that don’t suck, and the like. I even voluntarily went to The Home Depot. Wow. We’ve also made a family trip out to Ikea to look around, and today SBJ helped me pick out some curtains.
We’re also trying to figure out what to do with our dining room. As I’ve written before, we use it very rarely, and could use some more play or creative space for the kids, and a place for me to ‘work’ on the main level of the house. So I’ve thought about making it more of a study/den/creative space.
On the other hand, we do love having people over and would like to do it more. So it would be nice to have it usable as a dining room occasionally. But dining room/creative space don’t coexist very well. So we’re thinking it over.
The fun thing about today was after the curtain shopping, SBJ and I went to Starbucks. I decided not to have any expectations of it as an ‘outing’ and just stay as long as he was willing. Which turned out to be about 45 minutes. We sat in a warm sunny window while he napped and I sipped a latte and jotted some notes. It was a nice end to the afternoon.

» I have been remiss in posting SBJ’s latest stats: 23 pounds and 27 inches at six months. Yes, I’ve got the big mama biceps.
» Aaaaaand little she-who-is lost another tooth this week!
» SBJ is four months old, 19 pounds 5 ounces, and 26 inches tall. GIGANTOR!

Sounds like a good, good day.

I have repurposed my dining room as a dining room/office/music room. I think I did okay. I have a small table that I use as a desk, in the corner. All my files and such are in plastic tubs. It takes about 10 minutes to relocate all of the stuff save the printer and computer to my clothes closet. If I want to move the computer and printer, add another 5 minutes. And then the small table that is a desk can be a table for food, too. Not that I’ve had anybody but my parents over since then, but it can be done, and I enjoy having an office.
Can you put something protective-like over your dining room table (I don’t know what that might be? plexi-glass? so that it can be a table for kids until yhou want it not to be?
Maybe try putting the dining room table to the side of any room for now and putting a big sheet over it to make a tent for the kiddos…they always love that!
I like Mamala’s idea and would add to it to have the kids paint the sheet so that it looks like a “house” with windows…or whatever they want…..it could even have one of those table top easels in the tent with tubs of crafty stuff semi-permanently in place for creative things to happen.
Great ideas, everyone–keep em comin’!
I’m so glad I’m not the only person with three-year-old bread crumbs in the pantry. Stuff gets pushed to the back and you forget about it. Once you find it, you cannot remember how long it has been in there and are afraid to use it. Such is life. Enjoy the rest of your leave time!
Okay, so today I went to a meeting, and there was this funky covering on the fancy, dancy table. I asked why and the others there said they don’t trust the little kids to use the antiques. I looked up the info and apparently you can buy these table covers that are supposed to protect your very expensive tables from things like food, dents, etc. (I don’t think I want a table that’s too precious to eat off of!) but we use it at the U to protect against just normal heat from laptops, ink, etc. A woman I spoke with said she had one at her house because it’s where her kids do homework (elementary school–glue, etc.) and she didn’t feel like buying them their own desks in addition to the dining room table. She said she also bought plastic to put over her chairs for a while, but later just moved them into the garage, and put in stools that the kids could reach the table with. She takes off the cover and brings back the “company chairs” for big events. Here’s one of the companies (the company that made the cover at the U’s conference room. )
