Hey, it is Mardi Gras…
I am working on an article for a clergy-related magazine on approaches to organizing one’s life and ministry. If you have tips for tending to the various details in your work as a ministry professional (or if you are a layperson with tips that would be helpful for that context), please e-mail me at reverendmother03(at)gmail(dot)com.
I am especially interested in approaches to organizing one’s past sermons. But I want to hear about anything and everything that makes your life run more smoothly.
Thanks!

» I’m looking for some new online reading materials–blogs, zines, whatever. Creative yet accessible, inspiring but not schmaltzy, smart but not impenetrable. Recommendations welcome.
» The latest on SBJ: at one year, he weighs 30.5 pounds (99%), is 32 inches tall (97%) and is 100% cute.
» I have been remiss in posting SBJ’s latest stats: 23 pounds and 27 inches at six months. Yes, I’ve got the big mama biceps.

I wish I had something brilliant to say about this, but I don’t.
So instead I ask: when this is finished, you’ll tell us how to find it, right? I could use some tips, esp. organizational ones!
since i’m lay i don’t organize sermons but i do organize 30 years of poetry. i have a database w/ first, second, and last lines and keywords of 4000 poems (including keywords for things like who or what inspired them—romans 8, election 2008, haygood church, birth, baptism etc.
it saves a ton of time when someone emails me to ask for a copy of that poem about bread that is for the new members of my old old church. or when my sister decides to collect everything about the historic chapel we worshipped in as kids.
has it taken great discipline to maintain this database through the years? you bet! has it been worth it? without a doubt.
Okay, this wins for the funniest headline of the day~!
I doubt anything I do would be relevant to the article, but I’m hurt you didn’t even offer Mardi Gras beads.
Thanks everyone for the comments here—I moved them into a separate space to keep track of them and compile them for the article! Keep on e-mailin’…
Mother of 5 ( now grown) I wish I had words of wisdom to share, but all I can offer are words from Julian of Norwich:
All will be well, and all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well!
Hey, to-do lists and file folders are all well and good, but a relaxed and grounded attitude goes pretty far!
put YOURSELF into the equation.
We are called to love God and others as ourselves - so self care is and should be a high priority. Also time with one spouse not only to talk about the kids and family / finance issues.
Google calendar is my new best friend!
And, ditto what Teri said!
We just had a panel at school, and one of the pastors on it mentioned that a GPS system will save you enough time and gas to pay for itself. And you know what, I have to agree. I have one (as a gift) and I keep thinking how much time I would have saved doing pastoral calls if I’d had one when I was first starting out. (Heck, I would have argued to take it out of the book budget!)
