Here’s my idea for a new kid product that I’m pretty sure doesn’t exist: a pictorial clock.

Our toddler will often get up before everyone else and just kinda wander around. Once it becomes clear that everyone’s still asleep, she can easily be coaxed back to bed.

The trouble, of course, is that she can’t tell time and doesn’t know when it’s wake-up time and when it’s still nighttime or early morning. So I’m thinking she needs a clock that displays pictures. When it’s 7:00 or whatever time we set, the clock changes from a sleeping picture to a wake-up picture. Then it’s just a matter of explaining that the child needs to stay in bed until the wake-up picture appears.

This clock could be set to change at certain times, like each morning, and it could also be set like a timer. This would work for quiet time in the afternoon. Back when C was giving up her nap I used to encourage a few minutes of quiet, for my own sanity and in hopes that she’d happen to fall asleep. But setting an audio timer would have woken her up.

I think this is a novel idea and could be our ticket to Easy Street, but R tells me that coming up with the idea is the easy part. Oh well.

But until that picture clock goes into production, know that we discovered that even a three year old can be taught to recognize the number 6 on a digital clock and to understand the concept that if you wake mommy and daddy up before the 6 appears, they will be VERY GRUMPY.

Is this the kind of thing you are thinking about?

And, I just printed out a picture of a 7:30 clock (Google Images led me to a web site for kids that has pictures of all the times…) and taped it below her wall clock and told her she isn’t allowed to come into our room until that time… It has worked for two mornings- long term? Who knows…

And you are doing this with three!

    Wow… I am in awe…

I hope the makers of the bunny clock are enjoying my millions.

But I’m surprised I never ran across that, given that I receive every kid catalog under the sun…!

When ours were little, I bought a nice big analogue wall clock with a wide, flat rim. We painted the hour hand with nail polish, to help the tots identify it. Then I got some simple pictures (bed, television, breakfast, etc) and cut them out. We’d stick the relevant picture to the frame with blu-tak and it was easy for the children to see when it was time.

First loose tooth - quite a milestone for all. I miss those days.
