I plead sleep deprivation. They lost the car seat, then gave Kathleen a temporary replacement until they could find ours. The replacement had something wrong with it, so an 18-month-old had the straps laid over his body as though they were actually restraining him. He didn't figure it out, so she was able to make it to a hotel (which was not the original destination) without him crawling all over the rental minivan, and she figured out how to fix the seat in the morning.
