Just from a structural standpoint, if he hadn't killed Rachel earlier, the scene with Gordon's son would have been a yawn.

The scene where the Two-face threatens Gordon's son was intense. It definitely made him more evil, almost purely so. The lesson there, I think, is that we are not so far from evil, no matter how hard we try.

At the same time, there was a greater and lesser sense of reality about the scene. I could understand Gordon's reluctance to act in that situation. But, as my wife put it, he would have had to kill me before he got my son out of my arms.

The problem with the movie is that it seems there are really people who aspire to be the Joker in real life, but there is seldom a Gordon or Lucious Fox. Batman never turns out to be interested in anything but self-interest. Good movie, great morality play overtones, but we've got to keep that in mind.

That reminds me of what Jefe Helado said at the orphanage that day in Mexico about how once you have children it's hard not to think of all children as somehow a little bit yours.

I watched most of the movie with my hands over my eyes. And yet, I really liked it. Cool to watch on IMAX, huh?
