Scene 1

Overheard at the bus stop last Thursday:

Mom 1: Did you watch her speech last night?
Mom 2: Oh, no.
Mom 1: Oh, are you guys Democrats?
Mom 2: No, we’re independents. We don’t vote straight Democrat or Republican. … Yeah, this year is a really tough one.

(translation: We’re for Obama, but I know you’re for McCain and I just don’t want to get into it with you…)

Scene 2

Today at the bus stop. Mom 1 walks up and starts talking to Mom 3:

Mom 1: Did you watch any of the McCain rally on TV? I was out while it was on.
Mom 3: Yes.
Mom 1: Did she take any questions?
Mom 3: No. Neither of them did.
Mom 1: Was it pretty much like the convention? What did you think of that speech?
Mom 3: Oh, I think she has a lot of spunk… I think she’s going to be a good complement for him.
[now watch how the conversation turns]
Mom 1: Yeah, I just don’t know… I mean, I’ve always been a Republican, because they match up with my personal values as a Catholic… but I just don’t think they have the right message for the country this year.
Mom 3: Yeah, I mean, it was a great speech she gave, but she was pretty much holed up for four days beforehand rehearsing and getting up to speed.
Mom 1: [agreed]
Mom 3: I saw this Matt Damon video where he said that McCain has like a 33% chance of dying in office. It’s really scary to think about her becoming President!
Mom 1: Yeah, I know what you mean.

Boy, I sure do write a lot about the election.

  2. 2 spookyrach

    interesting.

Please don’t stop! Writing about the election I mean. It is a reality check down here in this red state that I live in.

  4. 4 Mamala

    go Obama!

I am finding that some of my Catholic friends here are saying the only thing “Catholic” about McCain is his pro-life stance, and it is his pro-war stance that is leading them to vote for Obama. However, even most Obama supporters here in Texas have some misgivings about where he stands on things….

Well, if MATT DAMON says it….

i’ve never been so emotionally involved in an election! never.

Actually hearing that conversation of the moms at the bus stop gives me a little more hope. Watching people go apesh** over Palin has me scared to death. Even Republicans need to get a frickin’ clue what this woman stands for.

  9. 9 The local MD

Problem is most of the Republicans I know don’t even have a “frickin’ clue” what Bush stands for or what he has really done with his 8 years. And for many of them he has advanced the prosperity gospel. For the other people who tell me they are going to vote McCain-Palin I am asking “Do you really believe that you personally and America collectively are better off than 8 years ago.”

And yes, I have considered quitting my day job and moving to a swing state for the next two months to volunteer for the Obama-Biden campaign there.

I can’t believe Matt Damon is now our source of reliable information….

…at least he sounded mildly intelligent in that clip.

  11. 11 reverendmother

Actually Juniper, if you haven’t seen the video…

    it’s pretty funny

Also liked this comment afterwards, in response to Palin’s spokesperson who called it “name-calling”:

    Let’s unpack the spokesperson’s response:

“It’s not surprising that the Barack Obama and his celebrity supporters continue to tear down Governor Palin with little more than blatant name-calling,” she said.

Here are the names blatantly evoked by Mr. Damon:

    Sarah Palin
mayor of a really, really small town
    governor of Alaska
    President Palin
    the hockey mom
    a hockey mom

    Ouch. That had to sting…
