Mmm, bagel bite.
Here are some tidbits about sweet baby j that are better seen than read about… ah well. Maybe if we’re really on the ball we’ll get some video.
1. J is not rockin’ on the words so much, but he does have a few sounds that he makes consistently for certain things. “Huzzat” is a standard (what’s that), as well as “dat.” He also has “da” (dog) and something for kitty, airplane and peekaboo that I can’t remember at the moment (will update for posterity). “Aaa! Aaa!” with the touchdown sign works for “I would like to be picked up if it would not trouble you greatly.” And the other day I heard him say “thank you” and also “uh-oh.” Well, he sort of sang them. The letters weren’t there but the notes were, and it was clear from context that’s what he meant (received some food in the former case, spilled some in the latter).
2. He also mimics everything he sees. Yesterday I gave him some of my toasted bagel. He went to pick it up and realized it was a little hot for his liking. So he pursed his lips and blew on it, “fffff….” He also loves spitting into the sink while brushing his teeth, just like his sisters! Even though he uses baby toothpaste that need not be spit.
3. I took him to the doc last week because he’d been snotty off and on for several days. No ear infection, and he’s pretty cleared up now. But he weighs 30 pounds 10 ounces, which is actually almost exactly what he weighed six weeks ago. He’s definitely slowing down his growth.
4. He can push the chairs around the kitchen and climb on them easily. Which is irrelevant in a way, because he can also reach stuff on the counters, including the large chef’s knife that R took away from him this evening. [shudder]
5. He has 16 teeth, everything but the two year molars. Yay for eating anything! And just in time—our food grinder was about to give up the ghost.
6. R said the other day, “I’m realizing how fun it will be to have a son. He plays with toys the way I do!” I will let him unpack this remark in the comments, but I do know that J will run the matchbox cars back and forth on the floor and go “bbbbbbb….” I do not know where he picked this up. Maybe the Y chromosome.
He also loves airplanes, and gets to hear them often since we are in the flight path of a military base.

some differences in kids are sex-linked, but in our case our two daughters approach life in such vastly different ways that each of our three kids are really one of a kind in our family. one daughter keeps things very close to her vest while our son and other daughter share everything. one daughter likes to play sports very aggressively and the other does not. the one who is very aggressive in sports is also a deacon in her church while the other two don’t attend church at all right now.
sbj, m, and c will each have ways of relating to the world that remind you of yourself and of r. celebrate that wonderful mixture and don’t tie all of sbj’s differences to his “y”.
I’d like a fact-check - did Robert say “He plays with toys the way I do” or “He plays with toys the way I did” ?

He is so precious. Thanks for taking the time to share.
